Pianist Chick Corea’s new electric project, The Vigil, highlights Jazz Winnipeg’s fall concert season with a Sept. 23 concert at the Burton Cummings Theatre.
The 18-time Grammy winner has played straight-ahead. avant-garde and fusion jazz during a five-decade career. At 73, he has performed with legendary trumpeter Miles Davis, collaborated with vibraphonist Gary Burton and fronted jazz-fusion powerhouse Return to Forever.
The Vigil features bassist Carlitos Del Puerto; drummer Marcus Gilmore; saxophonist, flutist, bass clarinetist Tim Garland; guitarist Charles Altura; and percussionist Luisito Quintero.
Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $48 / $58 / $68 (plus agency fees) and go on sale Thursday, July 10 at 10 a.m. at jazzwinnipeg.com or Ticketmaster. Pre-sale begins July 8 at 10 a.m. for members of the Friends of Jazz Winnipeg program.
Others fall season concerts announced Thursday include: folk-pop troubadour Royal Wood (Sept. 5, West End Cultural Centre, Sept. 6 Lorne Watson Recital Hall, Brandon, $28/$33 door); progressive jazz trio BadBadNotGood (Aug. 6, Union Sound Hall, $20/$25 door); Canadian singer Jill Barber (Nov. 10, Park Theatre, $35/$40 door); the 5th annual dig! Magazine Rent Party (Nov. 16, Park, $25/$30 door); and Montreal-based pianist and vocalist Elizabeth Shepherd (Nov. 27, Lorne Watson and Nov. 28, Park Theatre, $25/$30 door).
The Brandon shows are in partnership with the Brandon Folk, Music and Arts Festival, Jazz Winnipeg said in its announcement.
