ROMI MAYES / Achin in Yer Bones (Independent)

On her latest album, local songstress Romi Mayes has wisely decided to stick to the winning formula of her last album, 2006's highly rated Sweet Somethin' Steady. This resident of the rock 'n' roll road has again corralled estimable producer and guitar wrangler Gurf Morlix into the fold and his presence is palpable. While Morlix may be the icing on the proverbial Mayes cake, here it's the local cats who bring the necessary dusty 'Peg City earthiness to tracks like Tire Marks, Just Like the Rest and the fine If the Lord Don't Love You. Achin won't cheer you up by any stretch, but it proves that Mayes is no one-album wonder and an artist to watch. 3-1/2 stars
