BRENT PARKIN

Vintage Rhythm (independent)

If there's anyone who knows about vintage rhythm, it's local bluesman Brent Parkin.

On his fourth album -- subtitled "Styled just the way you like 'em" -- the veteran axe man serves up a 13-track mix of originals and covers, delivering a soulful take on B.B. King's Woke Up This Morning, turning the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Give Me All Your Lovin' into a 1950s-sounding piano-based ditty, gets laid back on Fishin' Blues (complete with violin) and offers up some Delta blues on Crosscut Saw. Parkin is backed by a stellar band of local musicians and each song is punctuated by his tasty, tuneful solos that serve as the album's highlights.

The centrepiece is the Parkin composition Dedication Blues, a thank you to his friends and family who supported him following his 2007 heart attack (his girlfriend Laura Badger saved his life by performing CPR on him after he collapsed). "Well, the Grim Reaper called, he really put up a fight, but my angels were stronger and they won when they saved me that night," he sings. You can't argue with that. 'Ö'Ö'Ö'Ö
