TAFELMUSIK BAROQUE ORCHESTRA, JEANNE LAMON

The Galileo Project (Tafelmusik Media)

Tafelmusik long ago set the gold standard for period performance in Canada. On this DVD they are at their most unbuttoned -- the whole band on its feet -- playing from memory with and off one another and having a whale of a time performing music connected with the stars.

The group's veteran double bassist Alison Mackay conceived and scripted the program, a co-production with the Banff Centre, in honour of the United Nations International Year of Astronomy in 2009, the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of the telescope. The musicians performed to backdrops of images from the Hubble telescope and Canadian astronomers with an engaging narrative by Shaun Smyth.

The program and soloists are winning and perfectly balanced. Monteverdi, Lully, Rameau, Bach and others get royal treatments from Tafelmusik, with many notable solo contributions from the smiling individual players. The "choreography" is a bit stagey but the lively camera work shows vitality to spare in this very entertaining and diverting show. A CD is also included. 'Ö'Ö'Ö'Ö
