New Music: Country

JOHNNY REID

A Place Called Love (EMI)

On his seventh full-length recording, Scotland-born, Nashville-based Canadian Johnny Reid fully embraces his inner Van Morrison while still delivering a heaping helping of the country pop fans expect.

A Place Called Love is about love in all its various forms. Produced and co-written with Nashville veteran Brent Maher (The Judds, Kenny Rogers, Nickel Creek), Reid's latest comes out of the gate with the lively fiddle-driven You Gave My Heart a Home. Today I'm Gonna Try to Change the World is a powerful ballad rich in optimism, a gospel choir and bagpipes. By track 3 however, the wee lad channels the music Tom Jones built a career on. With the presence of a horn section, this disc oozes British blue-eyed soul.

This sort of detour might not work for others but Johnny Reid's adoring legion of female fans will eat this up like an overloaded bowl of Rocky Road after a bad breakup. 'Ö'Ö'Ö'Ö
