Alan Jackson Freight Train (Arista/Sony)

Buying a new Alan Jackson disc is a lot like eating at McDonalds -- you know exactly what you're getting when you order that quarter pounder with cheese and fries.

If anything, Alan Jackson is consistent.

On his 18th album in 20 years he gives us the expected fiddles and pedal steel while singing the expected songs about lovin' and leavin' and odes to average Joes who work their tail off day in and day out while their daughters struggle with broken hearts and rusted dreams. Heck, who but Alan Jackson could cover a classic from the catalogue of Canadian alt-country icon Fred Eaglesmith (the title track) and make it sound like it was something he wrote himself?

Freight Train may not offer any surprises but it doesn't deliver any missteps, either. As he sings on the lead single, It's Just That Way... and with Jackson's fans, that's OK.  3 stars
