Jerry Douglas

Traveler (eOne)

When it comes to Dobro/lap steel wizards, American Jerry Douglas pretty much stands at the top of the proverbial mountain. He's played on over 1,600 albums, has 13 Grammy Awards knocking each other over on his mantelpiece and still finds time to record solo albums with some of his high-wattage musical pals.

Traveler provides a good cross section of tunes that feature Douglas doing what he does best: pickin' and grinnin' and never missing a lick. The mostly laid-back instrumentals are balanced on the 11 track Traveler with songs featuring a bevy of heavyweights.

While we probably don't ever need another track "featuring Eric Clapton" (the turgid Something You Got hasn't got much) it's nice to hear Paul Simon, Keb 'Mo and Mumford & Sons in this rootsy context. Right On Time featuring alt-folkie Marc Cohn is another dubious dud, saved only from the mellow abyss by Douglas's lap steel finesse. Includes appearances by Sam Bush, Dr. John, Bela Fleck and Del McCoury. 'Ö'Ö'Ö
