JAZZ: Kenny Werner

KENNY WERNER

Me, Myself & I (Justin Time)

Pianist Kenny Werner will have you with the first tune on this seven-track solo recording, the Thelonious Monk classic Round Midnight.

The respected pianist who has worked with the likes of Toots Thielemans, Dave Holland and Joe Lovano, and led his own bands, says he doesn't really have a great time playing solo, but that "the ideas just kept flowing" over two nights at the Upstairs jazz club during last year's Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Werner is relaxed as he takes his time with the music -- four of the tracks are in the 10- to 13-minute range -- stretching out and allowing ideas to flow.

Round Midnight has been recorded countless times, yet the pianist gives it his own twist and makes it a new adventure rather than just another cover. He reconfirms his skill with ballads with All the Things and A Child is Born, while John Coltrane's Giant Steps gets a lighter rendering than the saxophonist ever gave it.

It's a treat to hear Werner on his own. Four Stars
