Local musicians vying for national folk awards

  • Print

FOUR Manitoba acts are up for Canadian Folk Music Awards, which will be handed out at a gala at Calgary's University Theatre on Nov. 10.

Don Amero landed his second CFMA nomination for Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year for his latest, Heart on My Sleeve. It's been a banner year for the singer/songwriter, who picked up an Indian Summer Music Award earlier this month, as well as a Juno nod for Aboriginal Recording of the Year. He previously won a CFMA in 2009.

Vince Fontaine is also up for Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year for his work on Indian City's Supernation. Indian City, which sometimes features fellow nominee Amero on vocals, has already picked up hardware at the Western Canadian Music Awards, Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards and Indian Summer Music Awards in the last year. Fontaine, meanwhile, won a CFMA in 2011 for his solo project, Songs for Turtle Island.

Singer/songwriter Ruth Moody, of Juno-winning trio the Wailin' Jennys, is up for Contemporary Album of the Year for her latest solo outing, These Wilder Things. Moody has been on the road steadily since the album's release this past spring, playing showcases at Austin's SXSW and Nashville's Americana Music Festival, as well as opening for Mark Knopfler on his recent European tour. (These Wilder Things' producer, Toronto's David Travers-Smith, is up for Producer of the Year.)

Rounding out the local nominations is francophone children's performer Madame Diva, a.k.a. Jocelyne Baribeau. She's up for Children's Album of the Year for Viva La Diva. Nominated for a CFMA in 2011 for Francophone Album of the Year, Baribeau's contemporary project, Petits papiers, is up for a 2013 Western Canadian Music Award.
