Music, boards, education make up Skate 4 Cancer

MUSIC, skateboard competitions and cancer education will make up the fifth annual Skate 4 Cancer event at The Forks next month.

More than 12 local bands, including the Rippers, Lytics, Waster, Take Me to the Pilot, Dangercat and the Cannon Bros. will play the free all-ages event May 26 while dozens of skateboarders take part in competitions at the skate park.

The show will move to the Pyramid Cabaret in the evening for sets by DJ Co-op, DJ Hunnicut and New Slang. Admission is $10.

The focus of the misleadingly named event is to educate people about cancer prevention and detection techniques, but any donations collected will be passed on to local charities. Last year $1,500 was donated to the acute leukemia/blood and marrow transplant oncology unit at Health Sciences Centre.
