Music Festival Results / 'I can't even imagine not playing'
Violinist Jennnifer Yong didn't listen to any of her 13 competitors at Saturday's concert to determine the best senior instrumentalist in the 92nd annual Winnipeg Music Festival.
"I was just trying to concentrate on what I was going to play, and not get distracted. I was in the warm-up room," said the poised 7-year-old, who won the coveted Aikins Memorial Trophy with her performance of a movement from a Samuel Barber concerto.
Yong had already won three violin classes in the festival.
The Grade 12 student at St. John's-Ravenscourt School has been playing the violin since the age of four. She is the concertmaster (first violinist) of the senior division of the Winnipeg Youth Orchestra, a group she has played in since the age of eight.
Her teacher is Karl Stobbe, associate concertmaster of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
Stobbe couldn't attend the Aikins concert at the Winnipeg Art Gallery because he was in Calgary, adjudicating the festival there.
"I texted him right away," Yong said about her win.
The runners-up were guitarist Andrew Erickson, pianist Tony Zhou and saxophonist Matthew Packer.
Yong, who lives in Whyte Ridge and practises up to four hours a day, has two older brothers who are also serious violinists, but none is aiming for a music career. Yong hopes to go to the University of Waterloo to study architecture.
Nonetheless, "I'm not going to drop music," she said. "I can't even imagine not playing."
