Rufus Wainwright
Out of the Game (Universal)
Rufus Wainwright reconciles his flamboyant tendencies on his seventh studio album, Out of the Game, and presents himself as something of a more sincere singer-songwriter on the appealing dozen-tracker.
With a new daughter and fiancé in his life Wainwright seems to be moving ever so gently into the mainstream and even with usually over-the-top production whiz Mark Ronson at the dials the album is an understated treat. Opening with the loose, almost country-ish title track, Wainwright and his bevy of musical guest stars keep things rather charming. The moving Montauk has Wainwright imagining a future visit with his daughter and his hopes that she won't eventually whisk herself away from her dad, and her other dad, and their idiosyncrasies.
The lyrical honesty is palpable here and while sometimes Wainwright's voice is a tad colourless and even a bit flat, he still manages to charm. Out of the Game provides proof that Wainwright still has a few solid cards yet to play in his career. 'Ö'Ö'Ö1/2
