SUZIE MCNEIL
Dear Love (Universal Music Canada)
Love it or hate it, reality television "stars" have made their way into the very warp and weft of our consumerist society. Not that there weren't enough singers, songwriters or various and sundry other talented people vying for our discretionary dollars, we now have an unceasing array of sometimes marginally talented artists to deal with on a regular basis.
Mississauga-born Canuck Suzie McNeil made a name for herself competing in the dubious Rock Star: INXS music reality show and since then has had some success in her own right as a backup singer and performer. Dear Love is a song cycle of sorts, a contemporary look at relationships that break down and the fallout of emotions and feelings that result. It's a good album, and McNeil has the kind of sturdy pipes that have already taken her a long way.
The mix of music here isn't anything we wouldn't have heard by some other contemporary singer/songwriter if McNeil wasn't around, but she should be credited for staying the course and making an album that is much less generic than it could have been. She offers some rock moves, a bit of dancey thump and even an above average cover of Eurythmics' Here Comes The Rain Again which makes you wonder if there is a Rock Star: Eurythmics in the offing.
