Art Garfunkel, left, and Paul Simon perform during the 25th Anniversary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame concert in October 2009.
The sounds of silence will be shattered with The Sound of Silence at the MTS Centre in May, when one of the most popular folk music duos of all time makes its first visit to the city.
Simon & Garfunkel will here on May 5 as part of a western Canadian tour, industry sources have confirmed.
But, the person who books the arena and a spokesperson for promoter Live Nation both refused to verify the show, a normal occurrence when information about a concert leaks out before the official announcement.
"We never confirm shows. We wouldn't comment on any show that's pending or unconfirmed, but we're always on the hunt for great shows," said Kevin Donnelly, MTS Centre general manager and senior vice-president.
The western Canadian dates have not yet been officially announced by the camps of either Paul Simon or Art Garfunkel. The only show they have confirmed this year is at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on April 24.
The duo was one of the most popular folk acts of the 1960s with numerous hits, including The Sound of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, Mrs. Robinson, A Hazy Shade of Winter and Scarborough Fair.
They released five albums between 1964 and 1970, splitting up following the release of their Grammy-winning smash Bridge Over Troubled Water.
Both went on to solo careers, with Simon achieving greater success with albums such as his self-titled solo debut, Still Crazy After All These Years, Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints.
Simon & Garfunkel reunited for a free concert in New York City's Central Park in 1981 and released a live album of the show. They followed that up with a world tour and recorded a batch of new songs, but the record was scrapped due to reported creative differences.
They next appeared together at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1990 and for 21 sold-out shows in New York in 1993.
Their current reunion began at the Grammy Awards in 2003, when they received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Since then they have toured together sporadically. In 2009 they played Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
Simon & Garfunkel never played Winnipeg together, although Simon played a solo show at the Winnipeg Arena on Feb. 25, 1991, attracting nearly 10,000 fans.
