Singer-songwriter, 17, named outstanding aboriginal artist

A 17-year-old singer-songwriter has been named Manitoba's most outstanding aboriginal artist.

Ali Fontaine was presented the award by Manitoba Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Eric Robinson Wednesday at the kickoff of the sixth annual Manito Ahbee Festival.

"I'm truly honoured that I was chosen for this and that so many people are taking notice of my music," Fontaine said.

The annual award is given to an emerging aboriginal artist.

Fontaine, from Sagkeeng First Nation, released her self-titled debut album in June. She is nominated for three Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards this year for best new artist, best country CD and single of the year for Say it to Me. The APCMAs are handed out over two nights, Thursday and Friday, in Winnipeg.
