Spare trio or full band? Singer Propp gets to pick
TWO singers inhabit Erin Propp's slight frame: one who prefers the spare trio format for her songs, and another who relishes singing them with a full band.
They don't have to fight, though, as her voice can be sweet and gentle, ideally suited to a spare instrumentation, or forceful and dramatic, ideally suited to a full band.
On Sunday, the band proponent gets her way when Propp holds a release show for her debut CD, Courage, My Love, at Centre culturel franco-manitobain with a mix of good young and veteran musicians.
Propp, a wonderful singer, will be accompanied by guitarist Larry Roy, her collaborator on the recording, pianist Will Bonness, drummer Curtis Nowosad, bassist Julian Bradford, saxophonist Niall Bakkestad-Legare and Murray Pulver on dobro and other stringed instruments.
The recording has a dozen songs, but Propp said her concert may include some new material. She is understandably excited about the show, especially because it's "my first chance to play the music on the CD (live) with a band," Propp says in an interview.
Propp's strongest song, He Cries (The Breathing), is a dramatic tale of love performed with a full band on the CD, but live in a trio with Roy and bassist Luke Sellick.
Does she prefer the spare trio format, or the full band?
Well.
"Some songs had only been performed with the spare trio before the recording," she says. "But it's fun to perform with more gifted musicians onstage," she adds. "In the end I don't know. Maybe I'll know better after Sunday."
