The Bandurists are coming! The Bandurists are coming!
OVER the past 15 years or so, I have developed a greater understanding and appreciation for Ukrainian culture.
From art to music and from dancing to the written word, there is a great richness to this culture that was instrumental in helping settle Western Canada many years ago.
That's the joy of living in Canada where cultural diversity is encouraged.
Because of that, traditional cultures, such as those from Ukraine, are able to showcase their history for generations to come.
An interesting event is taking place this weekend illustrating that. And I would encourage anyone interested in learning more to take it in.
The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, based in Detroit, will hold a concert Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Jubilee Place, 180 Riverton Ave. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
The touring group is unique because it features a unusual stringed instrument called the bandura, which has been around for centuries. In the Middle Ages, it was a prominent fixture in the courts of Eastern Europe. And it was played by Ukrainian professional musicians called kobzari, much like the troubadours of France.
"We want to uphold the tradition," says Anatoli Murha, president of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus. "Our No. 1 purpose or mission is to be ambassadors of the bandura."
Since 1950, the group has been touring Western Canada.
"We have a long tradition of coming out there," says Murha. The group itself has a long tradition. It originated in Ukraine in 1918 but disbanded because of the Second World War. In the 1940s, it was re-established. But because of the political turmoil and persecution of the Ukrainian people by the Soviets and Nazis, it was difficult to continue. In 1949, 17 members of the chorus emigrated to Detroit where the group has been based ever since.
Today it has 40 members, and although based in Detroit, many are from throughout North America. They travel throughout the world "prolonging the life of the instrument," says Murha.

“We need to carefully add all the diverse elements that people need to live in a place: restaurants, workplaces, nice residences, perception of safety, green space, convenient transport, nearby schools for the kids they would like to have - if any piece is missing, the outcome will not last long.”
