Windsor Hotel branching out from the blues

Sam Smith is bringing his talent to the Windsor Hotel.
The local talent buyer will be booking acts at the historic downtown hotel on Garry Street. The bar is best known as a blues club, but Smith said he will be adding some other types of acts to the schedule, while ensuring blues acts still have a place to play.
"There will always be a home for the blues at the Windsor. It would be foolish to deny the history that makes this place special to so many people. That said, it's an extremely rare breed of live music venue in this day and age that can rely on a single genre seven days a week. In the interest of keeping the room viable for the future, we have to diversify and open the doors to a wider variety of artists and patrons. There's room for everyone here," Smith said.
Smith was the promoter at the Royal Albert prior to its closure in May, 2011 when a water-line break flooded the basement. The club remains closed and is undergoing renovations with plans to re-open within the next two months.
Smith will be booking local and touring acts at the Windsor, which is owned by former Albert owner Wayne Towns, who bought the hotel in March 2010.
The next few acts booked at the Windsor include Jack Semple on Oct. 5 and 6, the Renegades on Oct. 10 and 12 and Mark Sultan on Nov. 22. A new Thursday night event, Rock N Roll Draft Night, will begin by the end of September.
