Winnipeg songwriters vie for international award

SOME local songwriters are receiving international attention.

Ryan Funk, Jaylene Johnson, Chris Burke-Gaffney and Amada Stott have been named finalists in the annual International Songwriting Competition. The contest accepts entries from across the world and songwriters are judged by musicians and industry professionals in 21 different categories.

Local rapper Ryan Funk, who performs under the name Catskill, is nominated in two categories for his songs Kanye (R&B/hip-hop) and Sugar Town (featuring Clinton Sparks), which is nominated in the comedy/novelty category.

Jaylene Johnson and Burke-Gaffney are nominated together for a song they wrote with the members of East Coast group the Keats (Give Me a Ring) and she is nominated in the pop/top 40 category with Link Tipton for the song Falling Star.

Amanda Stott's I Still Need the Fire is up for best gospel/Christian song.

Winners will be announced next month. Judges include Frank Black, Steve Winwood, Jeff Beck, Timbaland, Tom Waits and Loretta Lynn. Prizes include cash, instruments and software.
