You've got a friend, Obama tells Carole King

  • Print

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama is showing singer-songwriter Carole King that she has friends at the White House.

At an East Room concert May 22, Obama was to present the 71-year-old singer-songwriter with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. She's the first woman to receive the award from the Library of Congress, which honoured her May 21.

King made famous such hits as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and You've Got a Friend.

She tells The Associated Press it's a tremendous honour to be recognized at such a historic venue.

Past honorees include Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon.

The program was to include performances by King, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, Jesse McCartney, Emeli Sande, James Taylor and Trisha Yearwood. It will be broadcast nationally by PBS on May 28.
