The Buzz
Sheena Grobb is in the spotlight at the Winter Wassail.
RANDALL KING / MOVIES
Tracie Thoms in Good Hair
A veteran of the movie musical Rent and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, Tracie Thoms comes across as the voice of reason -- "natural is freedom" -- in Chris Rock's documentary about the straightening/weaving/bewigged excesses of hair in black culture.
CAROLIN VESELY / MUSIC
Ye olde fundraising feaste
Tonight, the Winnipeg Folk Festival's Winter Wassail fundraiser will honour British troubadour Billy Bragg and spotlight Sheena Grobb (right), an alumna of the festival's Young Performers Program. The medieval-themed dinner starts at 7 p.m. at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Tix are $125 at Ticketmaster.
JILL WILSON / TV
The Prisoner
AMC's remake of '60s cult British TV series The Prisoner has been earning generally scathing reviews ("self-absorbed to the point of incoherence" said Entertainment Weekly), but all 17 episodes of the original show, created by and starring Patrick McGoohan, are available now on DVD.
KEVIN PROKOSH / THEATRE
Bang shang-alang
The percussive musical Stomp is making noise about coming back to the Centennial Concert Hall. Performers hammer out a beat with broomsticks, plungers, hubcaps, garbage cans and even the kitchen sink. The banging begins at 8 p.m. Saturday and again at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets start at $52 and at Ticketmaster.
MORLEY WALKER / BOOKS
No crocodile tears here
American literary star Jonathan Franzen famously told Oprah Winfrey to take a hike when she selected The Corrections for her book club. Now he tells The Daily Beast: "Oprah's show is the last place on the networks where serious books still sometimes get a hearing, so it's sad to learn of her impending retreat to cable."
ALISON MAYES / ARTS
Going for baroque
Winnipeg soprano Tracy Dahl (right) brings seasonal sparkle when she joins the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster United Church, for a holiday concert featuring baroque Christmas masterpieces. Former MCO music director Roy Goodman guest-conducts. Tickets $26.50 at www.manitobachamberorchestra.org or Ticketmaster.
