The Sturgeons Bio Born in the Norwood Flats area of St Boniface, Manitoba, 23 year old identical twins Calan and Lucas Hamilton started writing songs and performing in 2005. Having been raised in an environment of music from folk to pop to blues to old time, "the boys" attended music festivals all over the central continent. With their first original song "The Crucible" , based on the novel, they received great fanfare from local musicians and friends. After a period of playing unique interpretations of "old school" covers the flood gates opened with a proliferation of original songs and The Sturgeons began to get traction. Due to public demand they hosted shows at the Park Theatre and local bars and participated in the the Winnipeg Folk Festival's Young Performers program over 2 years resulting in solo and group performances at the Folk Exchange. After playing many local fundraisers with many musicians including Mark Reeves and the Crooked Brothers, "The Sturgeons" were invited to play at the Back 40 Sixties fundraiser as the Everly Brothers. The reception was fantastic and at that moment they realized their roots in fifties/sixties/seventies music with hook filled songwriting and great harmonies. More recently they have performed at Trout Forest Music Festival with performers like Ray Bonneville and Romi Mayes while sharing the stage at a Northwest Ontario concert with Fred Eaglesmith . They are regulars at the Whiteshell Music Festival each July at Falcon Lake, Manitoba. Songwriter Calan Hamilton on guitar, banjo, mandolin and lead vocals and Lucas Hamilton on percussion and harmonies worked with many talented musicians like Chis Dunn to create their first record called "The Wood Shop" to be released on November 19, 2011 at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg. An eclectic mixture of fifties/sixties pop and seventies angst folk rock with a hint of contemporary new grass, this record feels old, new, strange and familiar. Influences include The Band, Everly Brothers, Avett Brothers, David Francey, Neil Young, Lucinda Williams and Tom Waits.
