Mystery ingredient: Grapeseed Vegenaise

What is it?

A dairy- and egg-free alternative to mayonnaise. As the trademarked name — a hybrid of vegetarian and mayonnaise — suggests, its lack of animal products makes vegenaise a popular sandwich spread among vegetarians and vegans.

The mayonnaise substitute was invented in Los Angeles in the 1970s by a vegetarian cafe/market named Follow Your Heart. It’s said to be healthier because it’s low in saturated fat. It’s also gluten free.

(Grapeseed oil is purported to raise good cholestrol, or HDL, levels.)

Looks like:

Just like mayonnaise, or other popular sandwich spreads. Vegenaise typically comes in such varieties as original (uses canola oil), grapeseed oil (soybean oil), organic, reduced fat and soy-free.

Tastes like:

The basic ingredients are oil, apple cider vinegar, brown rice syrup, soy protein, sea salt, lemon juice and mustard flour. The flavour is similar to low-fat mayonnaise or Miracle Whip.
