What is it?
One of the newest non-dairy milk alternatives to hit supermarket shelves, it's essentially cold-pressed, unrefined flax seed oil mixed with filtered water. This particular Good Karma brand is actually labelled a "fortified flax beverage" and contains other ingredients, such as tapioca starch and canolo lecithin. While full of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, it contains no protein.
The unsweetened, original version of the flax beverage looks like skim milk with a very light pink tinge.
The flavour is fairly neutral, if not a bit nutty, similar to almond milk. Lactose-, gluten- and soy-free, it's only 30 calories a cup with 2.5 grams of fat per serving. It does smell kind of flax-y.
Flax milk can be used as a replacement for any dairy-based milk, so it's good by the glass, over cereal, in smoothies or in any recipe calling for milk.
