StreetStyle: Haley Allan

Haley Allan loves timeless styles. Her signature red lipstick and strong, masculine wardrobeare unique to her age group and inspired by icons like Katharine Hepburn and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Allan is currently working in wardrobe, styling and picking costumes out for a local movie on the Golden Boy.

She sticks to muted tones, pleated trousers and oversized sweaters.

What she wore…

TRENCH COAT — "Joe, actually."

BOLERO (FUR COLLAR) — "It’s vintage. I got it from Rhymes with Orange in the Exchange District. I think it’s Arctic fox — I love vintage fur."

SWEATER — Club Monaco

TROUSERS AND TANK TOP — American Apparel FLATS — "I think I got them at The Bay."

RING — "Cha Cha Palace. I used to work there. They sell jewelry, purses and clothing."

Fashion essential

"For right now, probably big, warm, boy sweaters every day. I love men’s clothing. That’s my go-to essential. I love things that are oversized; I’m always doing them with pleated trousers. For the past two to three years I’ve worn red lipstick every single day; this colour is called Ruby Woo by M.A.C. I love red lipstick because it’s so classic. I don’t really wear colour, I wear muted earth tones, so I try and wear red lipstick just to give my outfit something. When I don’t wear it, people are like, ‘Wow, I didn’t recognize you.’"

Style inspiration

"I love Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy — she was married to John F. Kennedy Jr. — she’s my style icon. She dressed in classic pieces that were super elegant.

My inspiration is Katharine Hepburn, because she wasn’t afraid to wear men’s clothing, especially for her time, and how she wore three-piece-suits; a woman wearing a three-piece-suit is awesome. She was beautiful and could pull it off so naturally. I love handsome women; it’s my favourite look. I don’t dress like a lot of people my age."

Fashion tip

"Oh my goodness, I have no idea — can you guys just make one up for me?" says Allan, laughing. "For girls my age, in their mid-20s, don’t be afraid to wear oversized pieces. And look for classic styles instead of looking for trends. That’s what I do — I love blackand- white films like Roman Holiday and Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn but only for the men’s clothing, specifically."
