I have recently inherited this CN Railway lantern from my father-in-law. I have looked all over the Internet and see many similar lanterns, but none like this. I am wondering if you have ever seen one like it and how old and valuable it might be.
The railway switchman's lantern you have dates from the late 1800s.
It was a presentation lantern from the Canadian Northern Railway, which was in business until 1923, when it was merged to become the Canadian National Railway.
I have sold hundreds of switch lanterns over the last 35 years. I have sold fewer than 10 presentation lanterns in this time because they are quite scarce.
In complete and good condition, they sell for $300 to $350.
