Diapers are the new black
Local designer's colourful baby accessories add flair to functional kid stuff
Last month I featured one of the local designers of WEST -- the Winnipeg Etsy Street Team -- with a promise to introduce readers to other members of the collective.
While exploring the reams of talented and aspiring members of WEST, I found myself drawn to a young mom of two whose stylish approach to design is taking functional to fashionable.
On the Go Designs Baby Boutique is a fabulous online store where basic baby accessories get a modern-day makeover with bold prints, monograms and luxuriously soft fabrics. They're stylish and sleek yet durable and useful -- ideal for any mom on the go.
"I wanted to have accessories that would stand out and look stylish in my diaper bag; however, if it looks good but doesn't work or last, then to me it's not a great investment," explains On the Go Designs Baby Boutique owner/designer Rachelle Lorentz.
"Moms are busy enough as it is, and any items that they can easily grab or use with one hand are so helpful when you usually only have one hand to spare."
The line of On the Go Design baby accessories ranges from blankets and nursing covers to diaper clutches and covered wipe cases. I just adore the clutches and cases -- they come in vibrantly hued graphic prints and can be embroidered with your baby's name or initials. According to Lorentz, these clutches and cases are also a huge hit on the mommy circuit.
"New moms love receiving my products and often come back to purchase gifts for their friends who are expecting. I create a lot of personalized items with baby's name embroidered on them and moms love receiving gifts that are so unique and special," says Lorentz.
Another popular item is the Minky blanket. These colourful covers feature a funky, geometric pattern in cotton on one side and a dimpled, super-cosy material called Minky -- because it's as soft as mink -- on the other. Like the clutches and cases, they can also be embroidered with baby's name or initials and come in larger sizes for tots who still want a little comfort.
"The majority of my work is focused on making personalized Minky blankets, which are my favourite to make," says Lorentz. "It's like a little piece of art coming together with so many colour combinations available."
