Brochure offers advice on keeping lake clean

Manitobans of all stripes now have a set of guidelines they can follow to clean up Lake Winnipeg.

Do What Matters was released today through the Lake Friendly Program and the South Basin Mayors and Reeves. Do What Matters can be found at: http://www.lakefriendly.ca/pdf/Lake_Friendly_Practices_and_Actions.pdf

Lake Friendly executive director Colleen Sklar said the brochure offers tip to a variety of Manitobans on how they can reduce the amount of phosphorus and other contaminants from entering the watershed and Lake Winnipeg. Phosphorus is the main culprit in the creation of large algae blooms on the lake.

Tips include reducing the amount of vegetable waste disposed through a home kitchen garburator, installing a holding tank at the cottage and cleaning up after pets.

A recent study showed if no action is taken to reduce phosphorus, more toxic algae blooms could form and create "dead zones" on the lake. Thicker algae sucks oxygen out of the water and threatens the fishery, and sometimes even clogs fishing nets in winter.
