Newfoundland seeks comment on environmental assessment of open pit iron ore mine

  • Print

LABRADOR CITY, N.L. - The Newfoundland and Labrador government is inviting comments on an environmental impact statement prepared on a proposed open pit mine near Labrador City.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada, controlled by RioTinto, proposes to construct and operate the mine at its Labrador West mine site.

The site is situated near the Smokey Mountain Alpine Lodge and sections of the Menihek Nordic Ski Club trails and its lands are within Labrador City's municipal boundaries.

The proposal includes an open pit containing an estimated 900 metric tonnes of iron ore, a storage area and a waste rock disposal pile.

There would also be haulage roads and a mine water collection, treatment and disposal system.

The project proposes the removal of two waterbodies, Pumphouse Pond and Drum Lake, and occurs to the west of the protected Beverley Lake watershed.

The environmental impact statement is on the provincial Environment Department's website.
