JONATHAN TORCHIA, 26
Paramedic with Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, race director for the annual WFPS Half Marathon
Torchia is leading the second annual WFPS Half Marathon today, sold out with 2,200 runners who are raising money for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Four years ago, he weighed 220 pounds and couldn't make it around the block. These days, the 5-7 Torchia is 165 pounds. He has run 24 half-marathons, several 10-mile, 10-kilometre and five-kilometre races and most recently completed the Twin Cities Marathon with a time of 3:23.55. Playing football growing up, he had lifted heavy weights for bulk but did no cardiovascular work. All that changed after high school. It took about two years to lose the weight, a key choice when moving into the physically demanding career of a paramedic.
1. Favourite workout?
I genuinely just love to run. To me, it is so exhilarating and you always finish feeling a sense of accomplishment. Whether it be a long, slow, 20-mile training run with the boys at 7 a.m., or grinding it out and running eight miles in the summer heat at Garbage Hill and giving it all you got, it all just feels great at the end. The camaraderie among runners is like no other.
2. Favourite workout song?
I would have to say Shoot To Thrill by AC/DC -- that one always gets me running faster -- and Ghosts n Stuff by Deadmau5.
3. Fitness tip?
You have to set little goals and go after them, and always give it all you've got. I have instilled in my mind to never give up and never let anyone tell you that you can't.
4.What's in your fridge?
Mmmmm that reminds me, I need to go get some more avocados! I literally always have those in my pantry. At any time, you could open my fridge and you would find little cartons of egg whites, Greek yogurt, hummus, cooked chicken breast, apples, some type of berries and lots of veggies.
5.What's your guilty pleasure?
Usually I reward myself after any running event by eating whatever I want that day. My go-to treats would have to be a burger and fries from Five Guys, a bag of Old Dutch ketchup chips, and top it all off, a DQ Blizzard.
