DAVE DONALDSON, 40
Canadian Football League official, Football Manitoba amateur football official, owner of Premier Football Factory (professional and amateur player development) national scouting director for Collegiate Sports of America Prepstar Canada and dad of three.
Accomplishments: Known in the football community as Double D, Donaldson played 10 CFL seasons including stops with the B.C. Lions (1997-99), the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2000-03), the Ottawa Renegades (2004-05) and the Toronto Argonauts (2006). Locally, Donaldson played for both the former Winnipeg Hawkeyes junior football team and three seasons with the University of Manitoba Bisons. These days on the gridiron, he wields a whistle and straps on the stripes. He played both receiver and defensive back, which gives him added expertise as an official as his role is usually back judge. He began officiating in 2006 at the local level and has now worked two CFL seasons as a professional.
"Most former players jump into coaching or TV. I wanted to try something different so why not try officiating? I just couldn't stop after that. It's a lot of fun. A lot of fun," he said.
1. Favourite workout? When I was a player, I would train six hours a day. Now I prefer to do circuit training or interval training. I like to cover a lot within a 45-minute workout two to three times a week, doing various high-intensity exercises non-stop within the 45 minutes.
2. Favourite workout song? I love to work out to heavy metal classic rock, hip hop and reggae. Rush, Judas Priest, Metallica and reggae artists like Mavado and Capleton. I'm all over the map with music. It keeps me motivated.
3. Fitness tip? My fitness tip is to spend some time investing in your health. Something as basic as walking can make a difference in your long-term health. Make time for it.
4.What's in your fridge? In my fridge it really is basic but I eat the same breakfast every day -- oatmeal or cornmeal porridge. Blame it on my mom! As a young man, I could not leave the house in the morning without having at least that basic staple. I still continue to follow this regimen. It takes two minutes.
5.What's your guilty pleasure? Candy, preferably gummy bears and sours. I like them more than my own kids do. Not good for your teeth. Oh well!
