KEVIN HILDER, 32

Teacher at Hedges Middle School, box and field lacrosse defender and box lacrosse referee.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: A teacher for nine years, working with children is at the top of Kevin Hilder's list of favourite things to do but lacrosse just might be tied for that top spot. Hilder has played lacrosse since he was six years old. Now a member of the Winnipeg Ravens senior club, Hilder recently returned from playing in the prestigious Ales Hrebesky Memorial Tournament in Prague, Czech Republic. Hilder was one of four Manitobans, along with Jesse Smith, Cory Henkewich and Don Jacks, who were selected to the Green Gaels team, which included Canadian players and expats now living Germany and the U.S. A 6-2, 240-pound defender, Hilder believes he was selected to the team on the strength of his "power cradle" -- an advanced technique to protect and carry the ball -- and that a teammate billed him as "a sturdy fellow." Hilder and the Green Gaels placed second in the 20-team tournament, which included teams from 13 countries. During the event last month, the Green Gaels became hugely popular with local Czech children due to a skills camp they ran, their willingness to share their time and the cool stickers they handed out. The team's motto was FHPT -- Family Honour Pride Tradition -- which some veteran Green Gaels players had tattooed on them.

Hilder, a Grade 8 educator who teaches math, art and physical education, also plays rugby but said "lacrosse is where my passion is."

1. Favourite workout?

Hiking with my dog Todd, an 11-month-old malamute. I don't go to the gym.

2. Favourite workout song?

I'm a bit of a folkie. But I would say definite pump-up songs are a favourite and some old-school rap from the '90s like Sabotage by the Beastie Boys.

3. Fitness tip?

Whenever I'm feeling lazy, I always tell myself you'll feel better after doing it. Whether it's a dog walk or a workout.

4. What's in your fridge?

Somehow I've accumulated a lot of salad dressings. But I would say my go-to items are Greek salad and I always have chicken breast in my freezer.

5. What's your guilty pleasure?

Salt and vinegar chips. I also like Coffee Crisp (chocolate bar).
