Half of Manitobans at risk for H1N1 flu

WINNIPEG - Half of all Manitobans are still at risk of being infected by H1N1, including many people considered at high-risk of falling severely ill, health officials said today.

Manitoba’s chief medical officer Dr. Joel Kettner estimates about half of all Manitobans have been immunized or infected with H1N1. He said with every passing day there are more Manitobans falling ill with H1N1, and he encouraged the rest of the province to get their shot to protect against flu.

"With every passing week there are more Manitobans getting infected, some of whom are getting severe illness.

Between Nov. 24 and 30, four people with H1N1 have been admitted to an intensive care unit with severe illness. Another two people have been admitted to ICU with a severe respiratory illness.

To date, about 384,000 Manitobans — 32 per cent of the province’s population — have been vaccinated against H1N1.
