No immediate plans for 'liberation treatment' trials in Manitoba, says health minister

WINNIPEG  - Manitoba has no immediate plans to follow Saskatchewan's lead and fund clinical trials of the so-called "liberation treatment" for MS patients.

Health Minister Theresa Oswald said she is unclear about the details of Saskatchewan's plan, including whether or not the province is moving ahead with human clinical trials to remove blocked veins.

Oswald said Manitoba doesn't want to "dash" the hopes of local patients, but doctors and researchers are split over the procedures' efficacy.

On Tuesday, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall confirmed his government's intention of funding clinical trials of the liberation treatment, saying he feels the province has a responsibility to support the potential treatment for some 3,500 MS patients there.
