Alberta premier announces cancer care centre in Calgary; final cost not clear
CALGARY - Alberta Premier Alison Redford says the government is moving ahead with plans for a new cancer care centre in Calgary.
But Redford won't put a final price tag on the project, which the province has said could be upwards of $1 billion.
She says the cost will depend on which financing option the government chooses — including the possibility of a public-private partnership.
The government has put aside $181 million so far and the Alberta Cancer Foundation has committed another $200 million.
The cancer centre is to be built on the grounds of the Foothills Medical Centre at the University of Calgary.
It is intended to replace the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, which will be used for other clinical services once the new facility is open.
Construction is to begin some time in 2015 or 2016.
The centre is to include inpatient beds, advanced cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies, an outpatient facility and a dedicated research space.
