EVAN GILL, 21
Third-year defensive lineman with the University of Manitoba Bisons football team, fourth-year arts student.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Playing for the Bisons, appearing in their first game at the new Investors Group Field on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. It's a dream come true for the 6-3, 275-pound Gill. After all, he pretty much grew up on site. His grandfather, Pat Gill, was the Bisons manager for 44 years until his death in December 2011. His mom, Denise, who had helped out over the years with Evan in tow, has taken over as manager.
"I've been here as a kid as far back as I can remember. I used to ride my bike around the (former) Bisons practice field, where this stadium sits right now," Gill said. "The new facility is just incredible; it does feel like we've just landed on the moon. It's just excitement to finally be in here and everyone wants to get that first win."
A graduate of Greendell community football, Gill won the 2008 provincial AAA football title, the ANAVETS Bowl, with the Churchill Bulldogs. He played in the 2013 East West Bowl, which showcases players eligible for the next CFL draft. In 2012, he competed for Team World, which beat Team USA 35-29 at the prestigious International Federation of American Football (IFAF) International Bowl game.
1. Favourite workout?
That would be shoulders and traps. Lots of overhead press, shrugs and rotator cuff. All very important for staying healthy in football.
2. Favourite workout song?
Usually something upbeat. Most of the time I throw on a good hour-long mix from a DJ, favourites are usually Hardwell or Ti´sto.
3. Fitness tip?
The motto of McDoles Gym (where I train) comes from trainers/owners Dave Beakley and Chris McDole: "Strength, Commitment, Pride, Determination." It's something to live by and remember each day. If you're not failing, you're not succeeding. You have to push yourself sometimes to find your breaking point. Get out of your comfort zone and find out what it takes to be great.
4. What's in your fridge?
If it didn't used to run, swim or fly, I don't eat it. Protein is essential for repairing any damage done to my body, so I need a healthy dose at every meal.
5. What's your guilty pleasure?
Eating two foot-long subs in one sitting, or eating an entire extra large pizza right after a great workout.
