JILL MATHEZ, 50

Principal at Dakota Collegiate

Accomplishments: Being active is a lifelong commitment for Jill Mathez, who has excelled over the years as an athlete in fastball, basketball and hockey. An educator for 28 years, Mathez is the first woman to be inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame. She was inducted as a builder for the many male and female teams she has coached over the years, including boys' midget hockey teams, the University of Winnipeg women's team, the 2005 under-18 provincial team and the Winnipeg Bears senior women's team. As a hockey player, she won 10 provincial titles (1986-1997) and was the captain of Sweat Camp Storm. She played five years of university basketball for the U of W Wesmen (1981-85, 1996-1997) and won a national silver medal. She played centre field for 20 years for the storied Smitty's women's fastball program, winning three Canadian championship titles (1995-1997) and is a member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (2004) and the Manitoba Softball Hall of Fame (2007).

"My staff know that I really value a work-life balance, for me and for them," she said. "I priorize that. On Sunday night, I look at my week and determine when I'm going to be working out and caring for myself and balance what I need to be doing for the school in the off hours (evening work)."

Favourite workout?

Right after work, I enjoy getting out to Harte Trail to walk my dog, Jackson, a 15-year-old terrier/schnauzer cross. It's a great warm-up for my workout. I strength-train two days a week. I do cardio three days a week, and one day I do yoga. I always take one day off. When I have a late evening meeting at the Dakota, I can usually be found working out in our weight room right after school among our Lancer football team... it's fun!

Favourite workout song?

Every workout has to include John Fogerty's Centerfield.

Fitness tip?

I've always said, 'When you least feel like doing something, it's in fact the most important time to do it.' So, if you don't feel like working out, hit that treadmill!

What's in your fridge?

Nothing better than all the berries: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, grapes, complete with Balderson aged white cheddar cheese.

What's your guilty pleasure?

Strawberry Twizzlers and Coca-Cola.
