Jamie Wilson, 46
Treaty commissioner, Treaty Commission of Manitoba
Accomplishments: A former U.S. military Special Operations Ranger and Canadian Forces reservist who has earned two university degrees, Wilson knows plenty about setting and achieving goals. He has been known to quote one of his former sergeants who said, "When you die, make sure it's the last thing you have left to do." It is clear Wilson is packing as much as possible into each day. After growing up on a Manitoba farm and graduating from the University of Winnipeg Collegiate, Wilson completed a bachelor of arts degree in cultural anthropology at the U of W. He then obtained a master's in education administration from the University of Manitoba, a U.S Multi-subject Teaching Credential from California State University in Sacramento and has teaching experience in public school, reserve and American charter school systems.
Now in his fourth year as treaty commissioner, Wilson spends his work days finding pathways through education to identify new opportunities and enhance mutual respect between all peoples in Manitoba and encouraging discussion and public understanding of treaties and treaty relationships.
"My passion has always been education, aboriginal education in particular. Working with young people, you see that light-bulb moment when they realize they're part of that whole relationship between First Nations and other people and they can take responsibility for it," Wilson said. "Now my passion has grown. I'm gaining a new-found respect and passion for business partnerships, bringing together First Nations with different business leaders."
Wilson is a father of two daughters, aged 21 and 13, and a 10-year-old son, and also a grandfather with two grandsons aged three and seven months. He and his wife have always made their family a priority. Wilson said he discovered CrossFit about three years ago and found if he can work in CrossFit training at least four times per week, it keeps his mind and body healthy and productive.
1. Favourite workout?
Definitely a trail run in the rain. Something about running in the rain makes me feel deeply at peace and mentally recharged. I think it has to do with the rhythm of the rain, my footsteps and being alone. When I'm in the city I'm usually at Crossfit Winnipeg in the mornings. We have a good 7 a.m. group of regulars. That's when I like the longer workouts with a mix of Olympic lifts, running, pull-ups etc. I've always been good at pull-ups and push ups -- carry over from the army.
2. Favourite workout song?
Anything from NOFX or Teenage Bottlerockets. Can't listen to music outside running or riding, I feel too vulnerable. I am actually comfortable working out in silence.
3. Fitness tip?
I learned when I was in the 75th Ranger Regiment you can push your body way beyond what it thinks is doable. I've learned since then, with a bit of maturity, that pushing too hard can set back your fitness goals. I love pushing myself and challenging myself physically, but consistency gets you results. If you are injured, you will not be reaching your goals. Injury prevention is a huge part of my working out now. One of the things I like about the CrossFit community is the constant coaching and refinement of movements and technique, mixed with tough, high intensity.
4.What's in your fridge?
Steaks, fish, chicken, asparagus, cottage cheese, berries, pepperettes, yogurt, spinach and Stowford Press cider (80 calories less per can than a Strongbow!) and chocolate.
5.What's your guilty pleasure?
HAGGIS! We all need a little boiled guts with our oatmeal once in a while.
