Drummer and songwriter with Manitoba-born band Mis en Scene
Accomplishments: When Jodi Dunlop was eight years old and asked for a drum set for Christmas, her parents actually got her one. Her passion for percussion was born. Growing up in Gimli with a proud Icelandic heritage (her mom's side), Dunlop was involved in jazz band in high school. She and Stefanie Blondal Johnson formed their indie/pop rock band Mis en Scene about four years ago after meeting during their summer jobs in Gimli.
They chose the name Mis en Scene, a film/photography term relating to the setting and the feel of a shot, because of its links to their shared love of the fine arts. While Dunlop has completed three years toward a degree in fine arts from the University of Manitoba and plans to go back and finish it down the road, music is the road she is travelling these days. Mis en Scene is performing at music festivals in Barcelona, Spain, and Paris, France, during the next couple of weeks. They'll be playing in Winnipeg on June 12 at the Union Sound Hall (110 Market Ave.) Their debut full-length album, called Desire's Despair, was released in 2012, and Dunlop said they expect to be in the studio this winter to record their next album.
Mis en Scene was nominated in March for an Indy Award (Independent Music Award) for Pop Artist/Group or Duo of the Year. Dunlop said she learned the value of proper nutrition and hydration very early in her performing career. "I've been working toward eating as healthy as possible and drinking a lot of water so I can get through a tour without passing out after a show," she said. "It (playing the drums) is a lot more intense than people might realize."
1. Favourite workout?
My favourite type of exercise is definitely playing the drums, specifically playing a live show. When I'm up there, I just have so much fun and completely get lost in what I'm doing. I don't even realize how physically demanding it is because my adrenaline is always so high. I think the best kind of workout is one that you can get excited about and look forward to.

Age of Consent by New Order or Sprawl II by Arcade Fire.
3. Fitness tip?
Focus on the journey and not the destination. It sounds cheesy, but if you're constantly working towards being the ultimate bodybuilder or having the hunkiest beach bod, you can lose sight of how enjoyable fitness can really be. Try to incorporate exercise into your everyday life as much as possible. Walk places, stretch in the morning, meet a friend for a bike ride.
4.What's in your fridge?
I usually don't have a lot in my fridge because I'm always on tour. It is both super-important and very difficult to try and eat healthy as a travelling musician. We like to buy groceries as much as possible. For breakfast, we'll usually have a nice bread with avocado, cheese and tomato. For dinner (depending on if we have a kitchen or not), we'll make a huge salad or stir-fry with chicken or tofu. The best car snack is trail mix or roasted chickpeas.
5.What's your guilty pleasure?
Happy hour at Carlos & Murphys -- nachos and cheap beer.
