Canadian cookbooks come out on top at Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Paris
TORONTO - Two Canadian cookbooks tied with Microsoft for best charity fundraising cookbook for North America, while a Quebec chef won in the best cookbook category at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards for 2012 in Paris on Saturday.
"Breast Wishes, For the Men in Our Lives" (Gateway) by 10 cancer-crusading grandmothers from Foam Lake, Sask., and "Les Recettes du Kiosque de Limonade" by Marie-Josee Morin and Katrine Paradis (Robert Rose) won in the category for best charity fundraising cookbook for North America.
They also share the award with Microsoft Corp., for "The Microsoft Cookbook," a compilation of recipes by Microsoft employees with all proceeds of sales going to FareStart, a culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals.
The books beat out fellow nominee Michelle Obama, wife of the U.S. president, for "American Grown."
Montreal chef Martin Picard's "Cabane a Sucre au Pied de Cochon" (Douglas & McIntyre) was named best cookbook of the year. Dedicated to maple syrup and containing sensual art and photography, the chef's second cookbook is the fulfilment of his dream of owning a sugar shack.
Other Canadian titles also won prizes.
"Eat Raw, Eat Well" by Douglas McNish (Robert Rose) won in the vegetarian category.
In the food and drinks category "Papilles Pour Tous" by Francois Chartier and Stephane Modat (La Presse) was the winner.
The Saskatchewan women behind "Breast Wishes, For the Men in Our Lives" have donated close to $1.4 million to cancer causes through sales of their series of six Breast Friends cookbooks. The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards winner was written to raise awareness about prostate cancer.
Anne Reynolds, one of the authors, says the cookbook contains recipes from family and friends and includes sections on sandwiches and grilling.
In all, 294 books from 86 different countries were named finalists in 66 categories (with four or five finalists per category). The contest celebrates outstanding cookbook quality.
