FILMMAKER Guy Maddin, television personality Sylvia Kuzyk and businessman Kevin Kavanagh are three of 12 Manitobans who will receive the province's highest honour in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

They will be invested into the Order of Manitoba at a special ceremony at 4 p.m. in Room 200 of the legislature.

Lt.-Gov. John Harvard, chancellor of the order, will preside over the ceremony.

The Order of Manitoba was established to recognize Manitobans whose achievements have benefited the social, cultural or economic well-being of the province and its residents.

The other recipients are: Abdo (Albert) El Tassi, leader in the Muslim community and promoter of peace and tolerance; Yhetta Miriam Gold, advocate for seniors and the disabled; Roland Mahe, longtime artistic director of Cercle Moliere and promoter of the French language, culture and theatre; Joseph I. Meconse, a Sayisi Dene elder and Manitoba representative for aboriginal veterans; Sylvia Ostry, an economist and the first woman to be appointed a federal deputy minister; Frank Plummer, international expert on infectious diseases and leader in HIV/AIDS research and public health; Corrine J. Scott, pioneer, role model and advocate for women in policing in Canada; Emöke Szathmáry, former president of the University of Manitoba; Josephine Wright, who provided decades of service to the community with United Way.
