Mondays and motivation might just go together

As days of the week go, Monday doesn't seem to have a lot going for it. A lot of adjectives have been attached to the day, but "motivational" isn't usually one of them.
That'll change on Nov. 12, when Winnipeg hosts its first-ever MoMondays event.
"It's kind of a cross between an open-mike comedy night and TED talks," says organizer Stephanie Staples, a local motivational speaker and life coach.
The event, which runs 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Sam's Place (159 Henderson Hwy.), will feature six diverse speakers -- a mix of professional and amateur -- who will each give a 10-minute talk. Tickets are $10 online at momondays.com or $15 at the door.
"They're going to be everything from funny to inspiring to a little bit on the deeper side," says Staples.
The speaker lineup includes: inner-city advocate Cornelius Buller; parenting expert Debbie Pokornik; Darryl Stewart (creator of Plant It Forward beautification project on the Osborne Street overpass); Noreen Kolesar (mind and body performance trainer); Sonya Braun (female beauty blogger); and personal trainer Kate McKenzie.
Musical interludes will be provided by Julie Cote-Martinelli and Dan Donahue.
MoMondays originated in Toronto, where they're held on a monthly basis. That might happen in Winnipeg, too, if there's enough interest, says Staples.
The main goal is to give speakers an opportunity to try out new routines or to refine established ones and for audiences to learn and share ideas. MoMondays are for "enlightenment and fun and connecting like-minded people," Staples says. They are not for pitching your product or service.
"It's not a formal networking situation, but chances are the people who show up are people who want to make the world a little bit of a better place."
(Sam's Place, the venue for the Nov. 12 MoMondays event, serves hot and cold beverages and homemade eats but is not licensed.)
