New York -- Fashion Week, the industry's World Series, ended Thursday with shows by legendary designers Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. The eight-day stretch featured a head-spinning number of trends from jackets inset with iridescent panels to moody colour combinations of plum and navy. We've pared down the list to some of our favourite and most-talked-about looks set to arrive at stores just in time for fall.
Coats
FOR winter, designers paraded a profusion of pea jackets, swashbuckling capes and patent-leather coats. Diane von Furstenberg featured a particularly rich trove of styles in gray, maroon and black. Her mustard fingertip-length coat topping a sequin shell and raspberry pants was one of the best looks of the week.
All that glitters
Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch and Prabal Gurung were among the many designers touched by Midas. Jacobs' raspberry sequin dress is admittedly a runway-only look, but minus the mink hat and boa, the dress alone could shine for a confident woman in charge of a gala event.
Pantsuits
RACHEL Zoe said her collection was inspired by rock stars such as Mick Jagger for whom pantsuits were a signature style. Whether you add the jabot blouse, this is a practical and versatile solution to the constant "What am I going to wear today?" question. Just ask Hillary Clinton.
Winter white
WHAT better way to snub winter than to wear white? Philip Lim's monochromatic cape jacket and sharply creased slim trousers will look fresh even in February. Amy Smilovic of Tibi also showed a penchant for white in a pantsuit and matching knit sweater and skirt. Be sure you line up a good dry cleaner.
See right through
SEVERAL designers favoured sheer-sleeved dresses for fall. Jill Stuart, known for her nice-girl clothes, took a walk on the naughty side with dresses that showed a little skin, albeit under cover of chiffon or lace. Her crystal-embellished frock is best saved for nightclub-hopping. Note: Body stocking advisable.
Moody colour
NEON is so yesterday, and the jewel tones of this winter have evolved into dark and romantic emeralds and clarets for next winter. Even upbeat Tommy Hilfiger paired plum with black and mustard with olive for his military-themed collection targeted at uptown girls.
