AFTER a decade of fetishizing stars barely old enough to drive, let alone steer the fantasies of a nation, 2010 begins with a sign of hope for any woman who owns an eye cream.

In a newly published list of the world's 99 most desirable female stars, as determined by more than six million online votes, women in their 30s and 40s represent nearly 40 per cent of the top picks. The average age of the 20 highest vote-earners is 31 -- Monica Bellucci, 45, among them -- while overall chart-topper Emmanuelle Chriqui, the Montreal-born actress and star of Entourage, was born in the days of disco.

"Older women are not only on this year's list, they're really high on the list," says James Bassil, editor-in-chief of AskMen.com, the Montreal-based website that holds the annual survey. "Really young women are few and far between -- and the ones that did make it seem to have a real maturity about them."

The only two teens listed, Harry Potter actress Emma Watson -- now attending an Ivy League university -- and Twilight actress Kristen Stewart, have been working since they were kids and are likelier to be seen with their heads in a book than their feet on a bar-top.

Other celebrities igniting imaginations are Marisa Miller, 31, Penelope Cruz, 35, Kate Beckinsale, 36, January Jones, 32, and Padma Lakshmi, 39, all of whom land in the top 20. Fellow desirables include Heidi Klum, 36, Salma Hayek, 43, Brooke Burke, 38, Halle Berry, 43, Cate Blanchett, 40, and Aishwarya Rai, 36.

According to Bassil, plummeting interest in "sensationalist, trashy young celebrities" has given way for more mature, accomplished women to be recognized for their total package.
