European bus maker signs fuel cell bus deal in Aberdeen, Scotland

VANCOUVER - Ballard Power Systems (TSX:BLD) said Wednesday that European bus maker Van Hool NV has signed a deal with the transit authority in Aberdeen, Scotland for 10 buses that will be powered by Ballard fuel cells.

The fuel cell maker said the 10-bus fleet will be the largest hydrogen fuel cell bus fleet in Europe once it is in service.

Ballard signed a supply agreement with Van Hool in 2011 for 21 of its fuel cell modules. The company said it expects to have shipped a total of 22 by the end of this year including the 10 that will be used in the Aberdeen buses.

"Increased volumes of fuel cell-powered buses are supporting cost and price reductions through scale of economies, enabling fuel cell solutions to compete more effectively with incumbent transit technologies," Ballard said.

Shares in Ballard shot higher earlier this month after it announced an engineering services deal with Volkswagen Group worth up to $100 million.

Ballard engineers will lead key areas of fuel cell design along with testing and integration work for the design and manufacture of a fuel cell for use in Volkswagen HyMotion demonstration cars.
