BlackBerry Q10 Launch
My daily smartphone is the BlackBerry Bold 9900. It's an older-model 'Berry but I quite like it, as it's super good for business and it keeps me focused.
Two smartphones ago I had an iPhone 4S. I really enjoyed this phone for the time I had it but I decided that it was time for a change so I bought the Samsung Galaxy S3. I jumped on the Android bandwagon for a while and fell off quickly after I realized that I was goofing around on my phone way too much.
A lot of people ask me why I have an old BlackBerry and I explain to them that it keeps me focused. The Galaxy was way too busy for me and my ADD always kicked in and I never got around to replying to my texts, emails or phone calls because I was checking Instagram or playing Bike Race.
My BlackBerry has treated me well and has increased my mobile productivity noticeably. The one thing about my 9900 that I don't like is that it freezes up about once or twice a day. It's kind of a pain that I have to wait for, like, 30 seconds, but it's not the end of the world. This freezing is caused by the fact that it's an older device; this is why I am eager for the Q10 to come out. Engadget spotted BlackBerry passing the Q10 through the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for approval recently. We know the Q10 is coming out very soon we just do not have an exact date. The Q10 is going to be pretty awesome as it's going to be a brand new, fast, BlackBerry 10 smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard and touch screen. This is going to make the BlackBerry diehards extremely happy. It will essentially do everything my 9900 does now except it will be a lot faster and newer. The Q10 is going to be an awesome device and I can't wait to find out when it will be officially released.
Programming for kids
Should kids be learning to program? Yes. In this digital age, everything is online. If you want to create the next big thing, it will have to be coded. Every parent wants their kid to succeed and if you want to give your kid the best shot, enrol him/her in some sort of coding class at an early age. Some of the most wealthy and influential people in the world credit their success to being in the lab coding and learning at a very young age. Bill Gates snuck out of his house every night and took the bus to the computer lab to code. He never slept.
There are programs you can download for your kids to learn on. The first one I would recommend is Scratch. It was created at MIT and teaches kids to code by using lots of visual representations.
Another app is Daisy the Dinosaur; this is directed at five- to eight-year olds and is an iPad app. It teaches the basics of programming logic.
Hackety Hack is targeted to 13-year-olds and older.
Programming will be an essential skill as the future of technology progresses -- give your kid the chance to succeed by sitting him down and saying, "Check this out", and let your child explore.
Vimeo or YouTube?
YouTube is the most popular video website in the entire world. More than four billion hours of video are watched every month. 72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. Vimeo is an aesthetically pleasing video player that isn't as big as YouTube, but it has its niche. When you have filmed and edited your video and are ready to share with the world, which site should you use to download it? In my opinion, YouTube is the place where you upload your video if your main goal is to get the most views possible. Vimeo is a site that you upload your video if your goal for it is to be embedded on your website or other blogs. The Vimeo player is much more visually appealing and fluid than YouTube, and it's not cluttered and slowed down by pre-roll advertisements. Vimeo is the service you use if you are going for a more artsy professional look; YouTube is the spot to upload your video if you want it to get viewed and populate better in YouTube/Google searches.
