Former hard-nosed chef-turned-writer-turned-TV-host Anthony Bourdain has been a busy guy lately. When he isn't taking to Twitter to blast his former partners at the Travel Channel for sliding in some product placement in the last episode of his hit show, No Reservations, he has been working on a couple of new projects, including narrating a PBS series about rising young chef/noodle master/restaurateur David Chang and hosting one for CNN called Parts Unknown, which begins airing spring 2013.

Somewhere during all that travelling and eating, he wrote a graphic novel called Get Hiro! and also launched a new foodie magazine in collaboration with Chang and McSweeney's called Lucky Peach.

If you want the real deal behind his Cadillac rant on Twitter, to watch some behind-the-scenes footage of his new CNN show or to check out Instagram photos of his recent travels, Bourdain's Tumblr page has become ground zero for everything the former executive chef of Les Halles in New York is involved with.

For some people, there are plenty of appealing reasons to not be on Facebook, while others thrive on the interactions that occur on the social network and couldn't live without it. Some users are indifferent or may just use it as a way to keep tabs on their exes (nearly 88 per cent of users have kept track of their ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend digitally) or to stay in contact with people who have moved away.

But there are a few things where Facebook has become a necessity. Granted, you might not care about any of this stuff and that's why you left Facebook in the first place, but social-network suicide does have some fallout. From making connections on Airbnb (now how are you going to book that cheap apartment on your next trip?) and seeing what videos your friends are watching on Vevo (the whole social-sharing thing becomes difficult when you don't have an online profile), to crowdsourcing your lost pet, commenting on some of your favourite sites (Facebook is becoming the de facto login for popular sites) and sharing your life's biggest moments (because we all know it isn't official until it's Facebook official), the social networking giant is ingrained in our daily online lives, whether we like it or not.
