Small gestures of love

Little lockets and jewels will help get your Valentine's point across

  • Print

Valentine's Day is such a strange, made-up holiday. It kind of reminds me of New Year's Eve -- you spend a lot of time planning for a special dinner or evening out only to be disappointed in the level of service. Or, you spend days searching for a gift only to opt for last-minute flowers, which are likely wilted and delivered at day's end.

And if you're single, all of this emphasis on spending time with your special someone -- which should happen all the time, not just one day a year -- is a tad depressing.

That said, there are moments about V-Day that can be endearing at times -- like when you get a small token of love from someone special, or treat yourself to a little love.

There are two jewelry lines that came to mind when I was contemplating whether to do a Valentine's column -- Lifestyle Lockets and the Me to We Give Love collection trio of bracelets.

Lifestyle Lockets is a great option if you are looking for something that you can personalize. These stainless steel lockets hold floating charms and gemstones that you can handpick, allowing you to customize your gift.

The lockets themselves are adorned with glittering stones and strung with a silver chain and can be filled with everything from the family birthstones to tiny hearts and red crystals for a cute Valentine's Day-themed necklace.

The trio of bracelets from the Me to We Give Love collection are adorably cute and ideal if you are looking for something affordable or you just want to treat yourself to something special -- and they give the gift of love that goes beyond the simple act of gifting.

Each bracelet features a little charm -- an ebony heart, bone heart or love medallion -- attached to an adjustable cord in hues of blue, taupe and pink. These delicate bracelets would look great on their own or worn as a trio -- and for $13 each, why not.

The best part about the bracelets is they are handcrafted by Maasai Mama artisans from Kenya, using locally-sourced sustainable materials. Half of all the net proceeds go towards the Free the Children charity.

Lifestyle Lockets and the Me to We Valentine's collection are both available online at lifestylelockets.ca and metowe.com.
