Exfoliation the No. 1 thing you can do for your face

We have been so lucky to have had an early spring this year. Sandals are unpacked, tights are put away and that means it's time to put our spring beauty regimen into full effect.

While you are booking appointments for pedicures and maintaining silky-smooth legs, don't forget to take care of your face. Winter -- even the mercifully short and sweet variety this year -- wreaks havoc on the delicate skin of our face, causing chapping and dullness.

According to the beauty experts at Merle Norman, the No. 1 spring beauty tip for having great skin is exfoliation.

"As we age, the process of skin renewal slows down, leaving flat, dull skin cells clinging to the surface of our skin, leaving our skin looking dull and lifeless," says beauty expert Shannon LeGrange. "Regular removal of these cells reveals new, healthy cells underneath that give our skin a bright and radiant appearance."

The great thing about exfoliants is that they can be self-administered; no need to shell out big bucks on spa facials. Merle Norman carries a wide range of exfoliants for all skin types, ranging from simple facial scrubs perfect for everyday use, to more complex serums designed to gently remove dead skin cells.

Among the exfoliants available are Polished Perfection and Gentle Polish, two daily facial scrubs that leaves skin smooth and silky, and Micro-Refiner -- a microdermabrasion alternative designed to minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines while improving skin clarity and tone.

For those of you looking for a more intense exfoliant, the AHA Intensive Complex improves skin tone and clarity while alleviating dry patches, and the Derma-Peel System is formulated to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and age spots while improving skin radiance and brightness.

There is even a non-acid formula for ladies with sensitive skin, which will reduce redness while relieving flakiness and roughness.

Still not sure which exfoliant will work best to revive and rejuvenate your gorgeous face? Fret not, the team at Merle Norman provides a free skin assessment for gals looking for a more personalized beauty regimen.

OK, so now that your skin is perfectly polished, don't let the sun's harsh rays undo all your hard work. To keep your skin looking healthy throughout the summer, LeGrange says the best way to practise safe sun is by using a daily moisturizer that provides SPF protection. Applying a moisturizer with SPF is the key to preventing further sun damage, one of the leading causes of fine lines, loss of firmness and brown spots (and who wants that?).
