StreetStyle: Viktoria Grynenko

  • Print

I chased down Viktoria Grynenko, a native of Ukraine, in the Wolseley neighbourhood. She received a scholarship to the University of Manitoba to study music -- specifically violin -- here in Winnipeg. She mentioned she is getting ready for her mid-April recital and also finds time to teach private violin lessons to students, which was exactly where she was headed to the day she was spotted.

What she wore:

COAT -- "The coat is Nafnaf and it is from the Ukraine."

BOOTS -- Steve Madden

SCARF -- "Scarf is Hermes, it was a present from a family friend."

PURSE -- Guess

JEANS -- "I can't remember where I got them from."

MUFF -- "Sheep Skin muff is from Sydney Gitterman Furs in Winnipeg. I didn't mean to buy it, I was just getting my arctic fox fur back from being repaired and saw this muff and couldn't resist, and it was on sale."

Viktoria's style

"I like to dress up every day. Often people ask me if I have some special occasion that day. But I don't, dressing up just makes life more interesting."

Fashion essential

"I always buy dresses, I have lots of them... Lots of people associate wearing a dress with more work in dressing. I think it's the opposite, you don't need to think of your bottoms or top, a dress is just one piece. A dress looks pretty and feminine even if it's a casual style it draws attention. Another fashion essential in Winnipeg is a fur coat, I love fur and a long parka for the winters."

Style inspiration

"I look at fashion magazines, fashion websites. I love street fashion. I honestly was reading Winnipeg StreetStyle and dreaming you would meet me somewhere...

"My favourite app is called Asap54. It's like a personal stylist in your pocket. You take a picture of a fashion item you like and the app finds the selection of similar ones or even the exact one you were looking for. I'm amazed every time I use it."

Has the disruption in the Ukraine affected you and your family back home?

"These past three months have been very stressful because of the revolution in Ukraine, and now the Russian invasion and occupation of Ukrainian territory. The revolution was in Kyiv, my native city, so it's extra-hard to be far away when my brothers and sisters are fighting for their freedom and democracy."

What is a fashion tip you could give to others?

"Don't be afraid to wear bright lipstick. Bright lipstick and no/very little mascara is a very bold and daring look."
